How to Press DTF Transfers: Heat Press Settings & Step-by-Step Guide

DTF (direct-to-film) transfers are one of the easiest ways to put full-color designs on apparel. With the right heat press settings, a transfer goes on in seconds and lasts 50+ washes without cracking, fading or peeling. This guide covers the exact settings we recommend for Gravity Designs transfers.

Heat press settings at a glance

• Temperature: 280–300°F (138–149°C)
• Time: 6–8 seconds
• Pressure: firm, 90+ psi (medium, about 60 psi, for 100% polyester)
• Peel: instant (hot) peel

Step-by-step: how to apply a DTF transfer

1. Pre-press the garment for 3–5 seconds. This removes moisture and wrinkles, which are the most common reasons a transfer doesn't stick.
2. Position the transfer face down on the garment where you want the design.
3. Press at 280–300°F for 6–8 seconds with firm pressure.
4. Peel the film right away. Our transfers use instant-peel film, so you don't need to wait for it to cool. If an edge lifts, close the press for another 3–5 seconds and peel again.
5. Re-press for 5 seconds with parchment paper over the design. This finishing press locks the print in and gives it a softer feel.

What fabrics work?

DTF transfers work on light and dark fabrics, including 100% cotton, 100% polyester, cotton/poly blends, nylon, denim, canvas and spandex blends. We don't recommend them for waterproof-treated fabrics, silicone-coated materials or very rough textures.

Transfer not sticking? Check these first

• Temperature too low
• Not enough pressure
• Moisture left in the garment (always pre-press)
• Peeling too quickly before the press has done its job

Washing and care

To get the longest life out of your print, wait 24 hours before the first wash, wash inside-out in cold water, skip bleach and fabric softener, and tumble dry on low or hang dry. If you need to iron, never iron directly on the print: turn the garment inside-out or use parchment paper.
