Screen printing and DTF (direct-to-film) transfers are two of the most popular ways to decorate apparel. Both can look great, but they suit different jobs. Here's a plain-language comparison to help you choose the right method for your next order.
How each method works
Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh screen onto the garment, with a separate screen for each color in the design. Once the screens are set up, it's fast to print many identical shirts.
DTF printing prints your full-color design onto a special film, coats it with adhesive powder and cures it. You then heat-press the transfer onto the garment. There are no screens, so every color in the design prints in one pass.
Side-by-side comparison
| DTF transfers | Screen printing | |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum order | None | Usually a minimum per design, because of setup |
| Full-color and gradients | Yes, including photos and fine detail | Possible, but each color adds cost and setup |
| Setup cost | None | Screens for every color |
| Many different designs | Easy: combine them on one gang sheet | Each design needs its own screens |
| Fabrics | Cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, denim and more; light or dark | Best on cotton and blends |
| Very large runs of one simple design | Works well | Often the most economical choice |
| Apply it yourself | Yes, with a heat press | No, printed by the shop |
When DTF is the better choice
- Small and medium orders, or one-offs
- Full-color artwork, gradients and photographic designs
- Lots of different designs, names or sizes in the same order
- Printing on polyester, nylon or mixed fabrics
- You want to stock transfers and press shirts on demand
When screen printing makes sense
If you're printing hundreds of the same simple one- or two-color design on cotton shirts, screen printing can be very cost-effective once the screens are made.
How durable are DTF transfers?
Pressed correctly (280–300°F for 6–8 seconds with firm pressure) and washed inside-out in cold water, DTF transfers typically last 50+ washes without cracking, fading or peeling. See our heat press guide for the full steps.
